NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT 2 FOR
EAST HILLS RESIDENTS re FIREHOUSE RECONSTRUCTION
8/6/11

What is going on with the Harbor Hill Rd. Firehouse? by Richard Brummel

NOTE: We are working on scheduling an independent information meeting later this week. Specific information will be posted on the main "Firehouse" page here. Or call (516) 279-8941 for information. Anyone wishing to help in this effort should do so NOW (see below).

  • The fire station on Harbor Hill Rd. is slated to be TRIPLED in size, with a capacity for NINE fire vehicles at a cost of $3.4 MILLION. The facility will be demolished and rebuilt under this plan.

  • It could easily become a VERY busy central fire station helping to cover the current workload of TEN communities (including Greenvale, Brookville, North Hills and Old Westbury) and 2,800 annual calls the fire company documented before the zoning board in June.

  • The local media has unfortunately bent over backwards to amplify the official line of the village and fire company, even writing this week that the project is one of “renovations” for a “garage addition”. The fire company also omits any details of its expansion in a recent letter to residents.

  • The zoning board received NO environmental impact analysis, NO formal needs analysis or justification, NO discussion of alternative sites, and virtually NO input from local residents before voting hastily and unanimously to approve the variances. One voting member is connected with the fire company, as reported in the news.

  • There was NO prior media coverage, NOR any announcement on the village website.

  • Residents sued the village in 1962 to stop the original firehouse – at only one-sixth the currently proposed size.

  • Fire officials have agreed NOTHING prevents them from moving half or more of their fire fleet to the new building. (Their main facility is at the Roslyn train station.) They also acknowledged they looked at potential alternate sites including the Pall Corp. property and in Brookville.

  • Dozens of residents we have spoken with – at the Park, at their homes, and by phone -- have expressed strong concern or outright disapproval of the expansion and/or the hasty zoning process.

  • The zoning board can and should REOPEN its hearing to gather factual impact analyses, properly canvass residents’ opinions, and reconsider its vote. A lawsuit would easily show the ZBA failed to properly consider virtually any of the factors required under an “area” variance (NYS VIL law, Article 7-712 (b)(3)). A 30-day legal clock will soon start ticking.

  • RESIDENTS INTERESTED IN PRESERVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE ON THE HARBOR HILL RD. CORRIDOR NEED TO GET INVOLVED AND SPEAK UP NOW. I PERSONALLY CANNOT CONTINUE AS A ONE-PERSON EFFORT BEYOND THIS WEEK. – Richard Brummel
